Petition urges government to extend closing times for bars as women go hungry and are forced to skip HIV medication. The southern African country has seen Covid numbers rise dramatically this month, prompting the government to take drastic action, with land borders closed and isolation orders for anyone arriving by air. Malawi now has 21, confirmed cases , 13, active and 7, who have recovered, according to ministry of health data. Most of the deaths from the virus have come this year, prompting President Lazarus Chakwera to declare a state of national disaster. Two of his ministers and other government officials are among those who have died. But the sex workers said some of the new retrictions had led police to target them.

Prostitution in Malawi is legal    and prevalent around hotels and bars in urban and tourist areas. Human trafficking ,  HIV  and child prostitution   are problems in the country. Whilst some street prostitution occurs, because of police harassment its extent is limited. Sex workers and NGOs report harassment and abuse from the police, including violence, theft and forced sex. Prostitution also occurs around the logging centres of Luwawa, Nthungwa, Raiply and Kalungulu.
